# ACT Science Prep: 5 Strategies That Actually Work

- **Author:** Dr. Kristie (Founder & Lead College Advisor, Ed.D.)
- **Category:** [ACT & Test Prep](https://savvystrategies.courses/blog/category/act-prep)
- **Reading Time:** 6 min read
- **Topics:** ACT Science Prep, ACT Prep Classes

> Intimidated by dense charts, unfamiliar physics terms, and a 35-minute clock? Use these 5 repeatable ACT science prep strategies to read data faster and boost your score.

## At a Glance · Key Takeaways

- Why strong honors science students often struggle with ACT Science timing—and how to fix it fast
- Strategy 1 & 2: Skip dense technical intros and read axes, units, and trends first
- Strategy 3 & 4: Use question stem locator words and save the Conflicting Viewpoints passage for last
- Strategy 5: Follow the 4.5 / 5.5 / 6.5 minute passage pacing budget to finish with time to spare

If there is one section of the ACT that catches smart, capable students off guard, it is Science. Every week, parents and students tell me: *"My student gets A's in honors biology and chemistry, so why is their Science score lagging behind?"*

Here is the secret at the heart of effective **ACT science prep**: **the ACT Science section is not a test of memorized science facts.** It is a fast-paced, open-book test of data interpretation, graph reading, and scientific reasoning under a strict 35-minute clock.

Once students stop treating Science passages like a textbook chapter they have to memorize—and start applying a repeatable system—Science often becomes their fastest section for score growth. Here are **5 ACT science prep strategies that actually work**, pulled straight from our **ACT prep classes**.

## 1. Skip the Dense Intro Paragraph and Go Straight to the Visuals

On Data Representation and Research Summaries passages (which make up 5 of the 6 passages on the test), the introductory text is frequently packed with intimidating Latin species names, complex chemical compounds, or unfamiliar physics apparatus.

If you spend two and a half minutes trying to comprehend every word of the introduction before looking at Question 1, you are falling into the test maker's primary timing trap.

- **What to do instead:** Take 10 seconds to scan what the figures and tables are measuring, then jump directly to the first question. You will only read the background text when a question specifically asks for a definition or experimental step not shown in the graphs.

## 2. Track Independent vs. Dependent Variables on Every Axis

Before answering any graph or table question, spend 5 seconds identifying three things on the visual:

1. **The x-axis or left-hand column** (usually the independent variable the scientists controlled)
2. **The y-axis or data columns** (usually the dependent variable being measured)
3. **The units and scale** (for example, milliseconds vs. seconds, orwhether the numbers increase or decrease from top to bottom)

Students miss easy points in **ACT science prep** not because they cannot read a line graph, but because two tables use different units or list trials in reverse order. Labelling trends with a quick up-arrow (`↑`) or down-arrow (`↓`) in your test booklet prevents careless misreads when you are moving fast.

## 3. Use "Locator Words" to Pinpoint the Exact Figure First

Most ACT Science questions give you a direct roadmap if you know where to look. We train students in our **ACT prep classes** to circle two **locator cues** in every question stem:

- **Where to look:** *"According to Figure 2..."* or *"In Experiment 1..."*
- **What variable to track:** *"...as temperature increased from 20°C to 60°C, the reaction rate..."*

If a question does not name a specific figure, check which figure contains the exact variables mentioned in the question stem. Never guess across the whole page when the question is anchored to a single column of data.

## 4. Treat "Conflicting Viewpoints" Like a Reading Passage—and Save It for Last

One passage on every ACT Science test features little or no graphs at all. Instead, it presents 2 to 4 short paragraphs—labeled *Scientist 1, Scientist 2, Student A, Student B*—debating a hypothesis.

Because this passage requires more reading and comparison, it is the easiest place to get bogged down mid-test.

- **The Savvy Strategy:** If you hit the Conflicting Viewpoints passage second or third, skip it and complete all the graph-heavy Data and Research passages first.
- When you return to Conflicting Viewpoints at the end, underline the **one main thesis sentence** for each scientist (usually the first or last sentence of their paragraph) and note specifically where they agree vs. disagree.

## 5. Lock In a Strict 5-Minute-Per-Passage Pacing Rhythm

With 40 questions across 6 passages in 35 minutes, you have slightly less than **6 minutes per passage**. However, not all passages are created equal:

- **Data Representation (2 passages, mostly graphs/tables):** Aim for **4 to 4.5 minutes** each.
- **Research Summaries (3 passages, multiple experiments):** Aim for **5.5 to 6 minutes** each.
- **Conflicting Viewpoints (1 text-based passage):** Use your remaining **6.5 to 7 minutes** at the end.

Practicing this exact rhythm on single timed passages—before stringing all six together—builds an internal clock so you never reach the final five questions in a panic.

## Put These ACT Science Prep Strategies Into Practice

Reading about a strategy is step one; drilling it until it becomes automatic is where score jumps happen. Inside Savvy Strategies' self-paced **ACT prep classes**, we walk through real ACT Science passage types step by step so your student can turn their most stressful section into a reliable strength.
